As the end of high school senior year approaches for many students, the excitement of capturing unforgettable moments in the form of senior portraits intensifies. These cherished photographs not only mark the milestone of reaching the final chapter in one’s high school journey, but they also serve as a testament to the individual’s growth and development over the years; leaving seniors and their families with treasured memories that will last a lifetime.
To ensure a successful senior portrait session, it is vital to consider a few key factors that will enhance both the experience and the end results. Firstly, selecting the right photographer who understands the style and vision of the senior is crucial in capturing images that accurately represent the individual’s personality. A seasoned photographer also provides guidance on poses, lighting and composition that contribute to visually stunning images. Moreover, a professional photographer has access to high-quality equipment and advanced editing techniques that elevate the final portraits to an impressive level of artistry. But there are so many incredibly talented photographers in our area, how does one choose? Browse photographers’ websites, portfolios, and social media pages. Does their work match with your vision? Find a photographer who you connect with and who’s art you are drawn to.
In addition to selecting a photographer, the importance of wardrobe choices for senior portraits cannot be overstated. Thoughtful and deliberate clothing selections will enhance the subject’s personality and create a polished, sophisticated final image. Careful consideration should be made to select attire that remains timeless and reflects the individual’s personal style.
Though by no means exhaustive, here are some helpful tips to selecting wardrobe choices:
- Pick a few diverse options: Most photographers will allow for multiple outfits, but check with your photographer first. The most common options I see my seniors selecting are:
-
- A casual outfit (a flowy sundress or a blouse and jeans for girls. Jeans and a T-shirt with an open buttoned shirt on top or polo shirt for guys).
- A personality outfit (a sports outfit complete with gear and equipment, a musical instrument or hobby related item like paints or a book, a letterman jacket)
- Cap and gown option (please do not wait until your senior is given their cap and gown; many photographers have extras or they can easily be borrowed or purchased)
- a college T-shirt or sweatshirt (show off where you’re headed next year)!
-
- Plan all aspects of the wardrobe ahead of time – this includes everything from proper shoes, undergarments and jewelry.
- Pick outfits that represent YOU – Senior portraits should be a true representation of your personality.
- Play with Layers – a denim jacket, blazer, or open button down shirt can add depth, visual interest and pull a look together.
- Plan ahead with hair – Most haircuts look their best 1-2 weeks after the initial cut.
- Take care of you hands – Hands show up in a lot of poses, so make sure nails are clean and photo-ready!
- Don’t forget footwear – Shoes can show up in many poses too! Make sure you have clean, presentable shoes that are outfit appropriate.
- Solid Colors – Natural, solid colors will photograph best, especially for close ups. The focus should be on you, not the neon or busy pattern you’re wearing.
- Apply Makeup naturally – Your photos should highlight your natural beauty. Try not to go too glam or overboard. A little extra blush or eyeshadow can help from appearing washed out, but don’t stray too far from your normal routine.
- Consider glasses glare – if you do not have anti-glare coating on your lenses, consider asking your optician to remove your lenses from the frame for the photo session.
But most importantly, RELAX & HAVE FUN!! Your emotions will be reflected in the photographs; if you’re happy and enjoying yourself it will shine through!
By combining well-curated wardrobe choices with the expertise of a skilled photographer, the resulting senior portraits will serve as a beautiful and lasting memory of this important time in your senior’s life.
